Digital Portrait Painting

A quick digital portrait sketch painted in Mischief and bounced through other apps for final processing.  It's always challenging using new software. I'm used to having textured brushed from MyPaint. I like the advantage of sizing that Mischief's vector based canvas gives me so I feel the learning curve will be worth it. I usually employ several programs into my creation process anyway.

Mid week digital painting chill

Haven't had time for quick sketching this week. Catching up on needed rest, I've been relaxing to audio books and enjoyed Homeland by Corey Doctorow. If you haven't read any of his books check them out. They usually revolve around situations brought about by technology and how it affects people's lives and rights.

The painting is just a loose sketch. I'm just trying to exercise my art muscles. This weekend I an looking forward to having a model to paint. It has been many months since I have had a model session. Most likely I may be rusty, but it should be fun anyhow. Just keep it loose and sketchy.

I have my usual Fleur pattern involved in this piece. The eyes are darker than usual. I started the piece in deco sketch and painted over that in sketchbook pro, finishing the image off in Pixlr. Have a good rest of the week.

Oren Ishii, Cottonmouth portrait

Was looking for a female character to draw or paint, and ended up selecting Oren Ishii from Kill Bill. A bit more tighter than my usual art, but wanted to spend time learning to tighten up a drawing. This started on my wacom tablet and laptop, and ended up exported to my tablet for final color tweaks.

Painted digital portrait

Had a long weekend and was able to sit down and paint this digital portrait from reference. I spent more time on it than I do my speed paintings or quick sketches. I concentrated a bit more on likeness of the model. I used the Mischief paint program for this piece. The program is still relatively new and as it grows could benefit from adding a numeric input color selector and lasso selection, some layer blend types and additional parameters to adjust the brushes.

Paintings from this weekend

Quick paintings from this weekend. Sketches, really. They were only a few minutes each. I'm really just getting used to Mischief's limited brush set.

Another belly for breakfast

Breakfast with bagel, coffee and ink of a belly. I used the Bamboo Note app to ink this up quickly. Sticker is from the Pixlr app. This gave me the idea of a collab. I know someone who does great kawai characters so I may ask to do a collab with them.

Bamboo Note app, Sketch

I saw another artist upload a sketch from an app called Bamboo Note. I decided to try it out and it's great. It has the basics. The only thing you should know is that it doesn't zoom, and the left and right edges are sensitive to page flipping.

The Bamboo Note app is designed like a little moleskine with basic pens, pencils and markers. Your works are collected into notebooks and you can page flip through them and instantly start working on your pages. It appears vector based, much like Mischief. It allows exporting to various apps on your android device including social apps. Overall not bad for scribbling ideas that you can take further later. Below is a very quick scribble I did.

Saturday painting with Mischief

Initially I just wanted to throw out a quick sketch paint of a midriff, but I had to go back and add a hand. So it ended up being more of a longer session than I planned, but here it is.

Digital Painting, Matriarch

Looking for something to paint, I was pasting a video onto my eyeballs this morning of hyenas and lions. Unfortunately for one grandstanding matriarch, Ntwadumela was not amused.

I also excavated my old 17 inch MAG monitor. It was liberating to work on a monitor that wasn't wide-screen. In my view, it's the best format. you can work portraits, or landscapes. I loved it so much I bought a square 19 inch HP for cheap off Amazon.

Unless you have a wide screen that is 22 inches tall, the ultra-wide format is hardly good for anything other than for viewing movies. Ever try looking at a spreadsheet in ultra-wide? Too much scrolling. Portraits are also no pleasure to create on wide or ultra-wide screens. Bring back the 4:3 monitors!

The Outlet

Woo Friday :-)
The outlet. An often used creature which is taken for granted. This little animal can be found hiding around cafe tables against the walls. It's only purpose is to provide, yet it is often scorned when it does not work. Occasionally it has been known to destroy entire dwellings and structures.
